@iLabAfrica, a research center under the Faculty of Information Technology at Strathmore University, was established in January 2011 with the aim of promoting research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in the ICT for Development (ICT4D) ecosystem. Their goal is to contribute to the attainment of the UNDP Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and Kenya's Vision 2030. They recognize that the adoption of ICT technologies in developing countries has been slow, resulting in poverty, malnutrition, disease, and lack of empowerment for many people in Africa. However, they also see the potential of the mobile telecommunications industry, which has enabled more access to data and connectivity, thus creating a range of opportunities for entrepreneurs to engage in mobile-based services delivery businesses.
