They are governed by the Ministry of Education and the Kenya National Examinations Council. Most schools in Kenya are government-funded and follow the 8-4-4 system of education, which consists of eight years of primary school, four years of secondary school and four years of university.

The primary school system in Kenya is divided into two levels: Standard 1 to Standard 8. At Standard 1, students are taught basic arithmetic, English, Kiswahili, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education. As students progress through the grades, the curriculum becomes more in-depth and includes topics such as Mathematics, Geography, History, and Computer Studies. At the end of Standard 8, students must sit for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

Secondary school in Kenya is split into two levels: Forms 1 to 4 and Forms 5 to 6. At Form 1, students are taught a range of subjects such as Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Social Studies, Computer Studies, and Physical Education.
