Survey Department.
At Kenya Urban Roads Authority, I worked in the GIS and Remote Sensing department. I was involved in the digitizing of existing roads using ArcGIS software, drawing up survey plans for new roads to be constructed. This involved the acquisition of maps from the survey department, geo-referencing them, and extraction of features to eventually come up with a digital map layout.
I was also involved in updating those roads to match their current status. This was done using Sentinel satellite images whereby the digitized shape files were overlaid with the sentinel Images and their attributes such as road edge, centerline, and boundary information updated.
I was also involved I was also involved in the examination of the degradation of these roads and rebuilding them. This was through change detection to find how much the roads had changed by comparing satellite images obtained at different time intervals. It was also at the Kenya Urban Roads Authority that I got introduced to R programming language for use in Geographic Information Systems and AutoCAD. Road construction projects involve assessing the current and future traffic patterns and performing a cost benefit study to ensure the road will serve its purpose.
I was involved in Layout drawings, do legal research, and addressed environmental issues during this initial stage of road construction to ensure the project runs smoothly without running into financial or legal problems. Transferring design proposals from drawings into the ground. It involves demarcating site boundaries, foundations, and other necessary structural parts. I have been a part of multiple projects, including ones that focused on the maintenance of several roads and the design of some bridges.
