M-Farm - Nairobi

M-Farm is providing a revolutionary solution for smallholder African farmers. By connecting these farmers to urban and export markets via SMS and a web-enabled marketplace, they are able to benefit from better prices and access to a wider range of buyers. This is especially important for the 4 million households in Kenya, representing 24 million people, who lack the access to urban or export markets and are usually exploited by middlemen or have little motivation to grow cash crops. M-Farm is providing a solution to this problem by negotiating with buyers, creating demand, and ensuring product quality through its network of agents. This motivates farmers to move beyond subsistence and into cash crops that can feed Africa and the world, while also giving buyers access to a new source of high-quality, primarily organic, produce at pre-negotiated prices. Farm inputs are also made more affordable for the farmers, who are often living on less than $2 a day. In this way, M-Farm offers value to both suppliers and buyers.
