Company description
KFA’s initial role was meant to solve the problem of marketing farmers produce. Though started by a handful of farmers, the Association grew in leaps and bounds financially, and also became a farm input outlet by constructing an imposing four-storey building.
After independence in 1963, the colonial settlers were still in charge of the Association until 1971 when an African,Mr. S. Amalemba, was elected managing director and W.Ngumi the chairman.
The Association, over time became financially strong and vibrant, spreading its tentacles across the country with 65 branches before its woes began in 1985. The once vibrant association was renamed Kenya Grain Growers Cooperative Union (KGGCU). However, the change of name did not help. The association deteriorated further to an extent
By 2003, the association posted a turnover of Kshs600 million, up from Kshs 69 million in 2000.Parliament in 2005 passed a Bill seeking to inject Kshs 2 billion to revive KFA.
Some of the association’s properties in Kisumu and Nakuru have been sold by the National Bank of Kenya (NBK) recover unpaid loans of newly Kshs 480 million.
